Pinterest and your business name
User names are essential in social network sites such as Pinterest, Facebook and Twitter as it forms part of your account’s URL and therefore should match your brand as close as possible.
My Pinterest user name was pastimehobbyist and this reflected my love for various hobbies done in my leisure time, however I should have changed it long before now to reflect my business name Leisure Time Collection. As you can only have a username between 3 to 15 characters I could NOT change it to Leisure Time Collection and the next obvious choice was LTC, but this was already in use by someone else.
My business name is rather long and I have been working on ways to shorten it, the obvious choice would have been LTC, however as previously mentioned LTC was already taken and was also being used on various other social networking sites.
After looking at various domain names and discovering that three letter domain names are very expensive and that not all domain names are created equally, for example not every domain name is a valid TLD or CCTLD. I decided to purchase the domain name Handmade-ltc.co.uk, yes I know a domain without a hyphen would have been a much better choice, however as I am only going to be using this particular domain name to map this blog I could not afford or justify the £3,999+ asking price for the domain ltc dot co dot uk.
Why handmade ltc I hear you ask, well handmade with tender loving care has been my business tag line for sometime now and to be honest it was the most cost effect domain name I could lay my hands on. As a result of purchasing the new domain name I decided to change my Pinterest username , however as LTC was already taken and you can only have a username between 3 to 15 characters I could NOT change it to Leisure Time Collection, so I opted for HandmadeLTC. This now gives me the following url http://pinterest.com/HandmadeLTC/ which in my opinion is an improvement on my previous url.
I did consider buying the domain name LeisureTimeCollection dot co dot uk but decided it was far too long. I really should have given my business name more thought, however because I didn’t I now find myself with the difficult task of trying to tie in my various networking sites. Although Leisure Time Collection is far from the ideal business name I am kind of stuck with it, as it would be far too costly to change it at this late stage.
If you are setting up a new business please learn from my mistakes, take the time to research available domains and social networking usernames.
